Virginia Carol Hess
PERRYSVILLE—Virginia Carol Hess, 86, passed away on July 26, 2023, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Always known as Carol by family and friends, she was born in West Virginia on January 4, 1937, to Forest Gail and Geraldine Fortney Hart. On August 11, 1953, she married Prentice B. Hess, and they shared 52 beautiful years of marriage until his passing on July 5, 2006.
Carol and her family moved to Perrysville, Ohio, in 1965, where she lived for 30 years before retiring to Meigs County. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, Carol was a loving and generous woman who put others’ needs before her own. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, who worked tirelessly both inside and outside of the home. Carol was a talented seamstress and cake decorator; she and her family enjoy summer vacations, camping trips, family get-togethers with homemade ice cream, backyard volleyball, and croquet, traditions that she shared with her grandchildren. Every Easter her grandchildren would find buckets of gifts hanging on an outdoor Easter egg tree, an example of her love for them. Carol enjoyed gardening and grew the most beautiful flower beds; plants thrived beneath her touch, and she loved hummingbirds. Both an excellent cook and baker, she was known for giving out holiday cookie trays that everyone looked forward to receiving. She returned to Perrysville in 2007 where she resided until just before her passing.
Carol is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, who she considered a son, Sondra (Dean) Sexton and Lori Hess; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Scott) Richardson, Matthew Tackett, Erin (Tony) Klancar, and Sarah (Dallas) Lockhart and eight great-grandchildren: Evan, Zahery, Caleb, Sean, Chance, Kate, Lillian, and Chloe, who all lovingly called her Nana. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother, two brothers-in-law, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Along with her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death by her daughter Rhonda Hess Tackett in 2018 and her son-in-law Stephen Tackett in 1995.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M., Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home in Coolville, OH. Burial will be in the Cherry Ridge Cemetery.
