ATHENS — Richard F. Grim, 93 of Athens, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, November 20, 2017, surrounded by family.
Born on August 18, 1924, he was the son of the late George and Edith Fulton Grim. A WWII Army veteran, he served in the 11th Air Force 187th Glider Infantry Division in the South Pacific.
Prior to his service in the Army, he worked on his family farm and graduated from Shade High School in 1942. He went on to become a successful self-made businessman, as owner and operator of Grim Excavating for over 60 years. He was also involved in partnerships with JRC Coal Company. He often collaborated with the Hocking Valley Conservancy District on excavation and reclamation projects. He loved his work and enjoyed the camaraderie of partners, employees, and people he worked for. He was a champion of his community and took opportunities to help those in need. He made many friends through his work, projects, and hobbies including farming, hunting, and riding horses.
He was a member of the Athens AmVets, VFW, Hocking Valley Sportsman, The Shade Community Center, Shade Seniors, and Ohio Valley Horseman Association.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Glenna Yeager Grim, children Richard “Buzz” (Chris) Grim, Rita (Ralph) Withem, Robin Krivesti (Fred Wooten), grandchildren, Tracy (Donnie) Russell, Jazzma and Chelza Grim, Rochelle Withem, Hunter Krivesti, and several great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Millie Hooper, Ruth Conkey, Marilyn Grim, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Leifhelt Carper, Sammy Grim, and Pauline Johnson.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Athens Ohio Health Hospice, Nurse Melissa, and all of the home caregivers.
Services will be Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 10:30AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral home with Rev. Dr. Karen Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens where military honors will be conducted by the Athens American Legion Post 21 and the Albany VFW Post 9893. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 4PM-8PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ohio Health Hospice or Shade Community Center.
