Pete F. Evener, 90, of Chauncey, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, December 28, 2023.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home in Athens. Officiating will be Robert Weiler. Burial will follow at Athens Memory Gardens with full military honors conducted by the Albany VFW Post 9893 and the American Legion KT Crossen Post 21.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the day prior, Monday, at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home in Athens.
Born in Sand Ridge, Ohio, on November 18, 1933, he was the son of Edith R. Evener and Richard “Dick” J. Evener. Pete graduated from Chauncey Dover High School and participated in football and baseball during his 4 years there. He was drafted into the United States Army and went to West Point to honorably serve 2 years in the service. He was a member of the Chauncey City Council, AMVETS, and was also one of the founding members of the Chauncey Lions Club for over 50 years. Pete spent a lot of his time working for the Volunteer Fire Department in Chauncey and held many jobs while striving to give his wife, Barb and children what they needed. One of his favorite things to enjoy was fishing in Canada with friends and family and it was on a rare occasion that you saw him without a beer in hand. Pete was one of a kind and well known for all of his jokes, even with his memory fading he still could tell a good one. He will be profoundly missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara J. Evener; parents, Edith and Richard Evener; and his 5 siblings, Carl Evener, John Evener, PFC Joe Evener, Marjorie Evener, and William Evener.
He is survived by his 4 children, Becky Spray and husband Mitch of Virginia, Cheryl Moritz and husband Bill of Texas, Richie Evener, and Todd Evener of Ohio; 5 grandchildren, Amanda Beberg and husband Jordan, Matt Spray and wife Andy, Rachel McNiel and husband Garrett, Luke Phelps and wife Bekah, and Ivy Evener; 12 great grandchildren, Meyer and Cortland Spray, Jacob Hembree, Ben and Lincoln Boone-Green, Sullivan Beberg, Gwen and Alora McNiel, Adalynn and Declan Phelps, Nova Evener, and Journey Maffin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and loving family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Rich Evener, Mitch Spray, Bill Moritz, Matt Spray, Luke Phelps, and Garrett McNiel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Chauncey Lions Club. Please feel welcomed to sign the online guestbook or leave the family a message of sympathy at www.hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com.
