Nina Bates
Athens - Nina Bates, 90, of Athens, died Saturday, March 15, 2025 at the Lindley Inn in The Plains.
Born October 4, 1934, in Huntington, WV, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Nina Glick Bates. Nina was raised in Columbus, Ohio and has been a long-time resident of Athens and Venice, Florida. She was very active in the Athens Community and was a founding member of The Athens Friends and Neighbors. Nina had a passion for art; she studied it at the Columbus School of Art and Design, the University of Cincinnati and Ohio University. She has had many of her paintings on exhibit including at the Royal Academy in Glasgow and the Venice Art Center. She loved to travel, and visited or resided in France, Italy, Scotland, England, Indonesia, China and Brazil.
She is survived by three children, Cynthia (Mike) Chapman, Scott Lee and Annette (Mark) Mitera; eleven grandchildren, John, Holly, Eric, Nicole, Christopher, Robert, Whitney, Jordan, Caleb, Nicholas and Allison; sixteen great grandchildren, Ruby, Molly, Owen, Sophie, Aiden, Nora, Ira, Shereen, Elizabeth, Olivia, Peyton, Ezryn, Tobias, Victor, Logan, and Evelyn and five nieces, Cheryl, Pam. Jeni, Sandy, and Michelle. Her sweet little Lucy has a new loving home with Sarah Watt.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Sheeter; one son, Mark; one brother, Jerry; one grandson, Noah, first husband, James A. Lee, and special friend Robert Hardy.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Hughes Funeral Home in Athens with Pastor Mark Mitera officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Street Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 11:00 AM - 1:00PM at the Hughes Funeral Home. Friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at ehwfh.com
