Nickolay Kornilov

Nikolay Kornilov passed away on Sunday March 18, 2024, at his home in Athens Ohio.  

He was born May 26, 1946, in Kotovsk, Ukraine, the son of Vladimir Kornilov and Tatiana Denisova.  Nikolay is survived by his brother Dmitry; son Anton and two grandchildren, Marina and Veronica.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Tatiana Kornilova and his parents.  

His family would like to say a special thank you to all his friends and colleagues who supported him in the years since his wife’s Tatiana passing.  He was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Nikolay was an international scientist who dedicated his life to nuclear physics.  He was educated in Russia ultimately receiving his PhD in Physics and Mathematics at Khlopin Radium Institute in St Petersburg, Russia.

He began his distinguished and truly international career in various research roles culminating in becoming a leading scientific researcher at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineers in Obninsk, Russia.  Nikolay Kornilov held a variety of teaching and research roles with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.  Kornilov was an invited professor of the University of Louis Pasteur’s Institut de Recherchers Subatomiques in Strasbourg, France.  He was also a visiting scientist for the Joint Research Centre of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements in Belgium. 

From 2009, Dr. Kornilov was a Researcher at the Department of Physics and Astrophysics at Ohio University, USA where he later retired.  Nuclear physics remained his passion in retirement and he continued with his research and published several scientific papers.  Throughout his entire career, Nikolay Kornilov authored and published more than 150 research papers in various professional journals.

He was proud to become a US citizen in 2016. 

As an esteemed physicist and educator he is a member of the American Physical Society.  Nikolay has been featured in a wide range of honours publications, including several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. His name was included in the books of Scientific Elite of Kaluga Region and Great Men and Women of Science.  He is a venerated recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home from 5PM – 7PM with cremation to follow. Arrangements are entrusted to Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home where you may sign the online guestbook or leave the family a message of sympathy at www.hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Kimes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where his beloved wife, Tatiana, spent the last weeks of her life.
