ATHENS — Maureen Weissenrieder (77) of Athens, passed away unexpectedly on December 22, 2024.

Born on January 14, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, Maureen was the daughter of the late Edward and Agnes Craig McCafferty. She earned her Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree, and PhD from Penn State University and went on to have a successful award-winning teaching career as a professor of Spanish and Linguistics at Ohio University, as well as directing the university Study Abroad programs in Mexico and Spain several times. She also served as department chair and as Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences.

 Maureen was also an active member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages during her time at Ohio University. For that organization she served as a Spanish language proficiency evaluator both nationally and abroad.

 Maureen is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Bick Weissenrieder; two brothers, Ed (Jackie) McCafferty and Dennis (Chris) McCafferty; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 She was preceded in death by her parents.

 A memorial service will be held January 16, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. at Hughes Funeral Home. Prior to the service, there will be calling hours from 2:00-4:00 P.M at Hughes Funeral Home. 168 Morris Ave. Athens, Ohio. There will be an open invitation for guests to speak during the service. The dress code is casual. Snacks and finger foods provided.
