Leroy Delbert "Cowboy" Mayles

March 13, 1925 — May 15, 2018

MILLFIELD- Leroy Delbert "Cowboy" Mayles, 93 of Millfield, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 15, 2018 after a long illness.

Born March 13, 1925, he was the son of the late Leroy Woodworth and Delta Lucinda Keirns Mayles.

An United States Army Veteran, he attended Ames-Bern and Chauncey Dover High School where he was a passionate lover of his hounds, pulling horses, and the great outdoors. He was founder of Hooper Ridge English Kennel where he maintained a line of competition coonhounds and hunting beagles, sanctioned by the United Kennel Club for nearly 50 years. He was a proud past member of the United English Breeders and Fanciers of America. Leroy was loved by all his family and his wide range of friends.

Leroy is survived by his 6 children, Deward "Barney" (Jody) Mayles, Patrick Mayles, David (Debbie) Mayles, Tim (Diane) Mayles, Peggy (Charles) Price, and Penny Ford; sister, Phyllis Bennet; 25 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Magel; son, John M. Mayles; grandchild, Brian Mayles; 2 brothers, Zeke Keirns and Deward "Dude" Mayles; and 9 sisters, Nellie Phillips, Mildred Weekly, Josephine Gleason, Ruth Davenport, Bernice Thompson, Betty Dunfee, Maxine Hamilton, Charlotte Smathers, and Opal Eismon.

Funeral services will be 11AM on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Rev. Kurt Cable officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Athens American Legion Post 21 and the Albany VFW Post 9893. Friends may call on the family at the funeral home Friday from 4PM-7PM. The family would like to extend a very special thank-you to Veronica Richards for being such a loving caregiver in their difficult time of need. They would also like to acknowledge Debbie Geer and Patricia Mayles for their support, too.
