John William "Jack" Moquin

November 28, 1958 — November 14, 2023

John William "Jack" Moquin, 64 of Athens, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, with family by his side, after a valiant three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on November 28, 1958, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jack was the son of William Henry Moquin and the late Mary Elizabeth Kinzel Strang. At the age of 11, Jack and his family relocated to Ohio, where he would leave an indelible mark on the community he came to call home.

After graduating from Morgan High School in 1977, Jack pursued his passion for serving others by obtaining an Associate's Degree in Mortuary Science from the prestigious Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1986. Jack excelled while in mortuary school as he graduated with The Ohio Embalmers Association Lester W. Wakeham Award, recognizing his excellence in the combined practice and theory of embalming. With over 40 years of experience in the funeral and embalming profession, Jack established himself as a pillar of compassion and professionalism in the industry and was an active member of the Ohio Funeral Director's Association & The Ohio Embalmers Association. His dedication and commitment led him to become the owner and operator of Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, a cherished institution where he provided solace to countless grieving families.

In addition to his work in funeral services, Jack selflessly served as a Medicolegal Death Investigator for the Athens County Coroner's Office for over a decade. His expertise and attention to detail were invaluable in ensuring justice and closure were brought to those whose lives had unexpectedly ended.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Jack possessed a deep love for sports. He was an ardent supporter of the Cincinnati Bengals, Michigan Wolverines, and Ohio University Football programs. As a devoted season ticket holder for Ohio Football, Jack not only cheered on his favorite team but also organized joyous tailgate parties for family and friends. Known for his culinary skills, he thrived behind the grill, delighting those around him with his mouthwatering creations. He loved teaching his children and grandchildren his many cooking secrets during the multiple family cookouts he organized. Jack also found solace and joy in the great outdoors, relishing his time spent hunting, camping, fishing, and surrounded by the natural beauty he cherished.

Jack's legacy of love and devotion extends far beyond his professional and recreational endeavors. He leaves behind a grieving but grateful family, including his beloved wife of over 30 years, Alecia Ann Moquin. Jack will forever be remembered as a dedicated and loving father to his children, Jacki Darnell (Scott) Wallace, Weston Henri (Brittanie) Moquin, Danielle Marie Andrews, and Timothy Vance (Breanna) Moquin. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Savannah and Lincoln Wallace, Brylee and Bristol McAngus, and Emersyn, Ripley, and Annabelle Moquin. Jack was also a dear brother to Jeannie Guinn, Donna Balazovic, and Amy Jenema, and a friend to many who were fortunate enough to know him closely.

Besides his mother, Jack is preceded in death by his dear friend, Charles W. "Charlie" McClain, 2021.

In the midst of mourning their loss, the family finds solace in the cherished memories they shared with Jack. They would like to extend a special thank-you to the compassionate staff at OSU The James Cancer Center, OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital, OhioHealth Hospice, and the dedicated first responders & friends who tirelessly supported and cared for Jack during his final days. The outpouring support from the community during his battle with cancer is forever cherished by the Moquin Family.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the funeral home Jack dedicated his entire life to, Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Friends and loved ones are invited to join the family for the funeral services, which will take place 11AM on Friday, November 17, 2023, followed by a burial at Clarks Chapel Cemetery.
