ATHENS—George O. Whitesel, 93, of Athens, died early Thursday morning, July 27, 2017, at The Laurels of Athens. Born March 26, 1924 in Glenville, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Ola Everett and Eva Norris Whitesel. George served in World War II, serving in the Quarter Master Battalion at Camp Young, California from which he was honorably discharged in 1943. He attended the Strouds Run Community Church. George was also a lifetime carpenter and was a member of the Carpenter’s Local #356 for over 50 years from which he retired. It was apparent at an early age that he was going to be a good carpenter and through the years he built many pieces of furniture for his family and friends. George also loved to travel. Being the seventh of eight children, George is survived by his sister, Agnes Wolfe, nephew Randy Wolfe with his wife, Susan who was George’s caregiver, nieces Barbara (Joe) Rader and Kathy (Brian) McPherson, many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Everett Whitesel in 1982 and his second wife, Wanda Gillette Whitesel in 2003, brothers, Leonard and Ernest, sisters, Rhoda James, Macel James, Euniee Messenger, and Peggy Lynn. At the request of Mr. Whitesel, there will be only graveside services at the Athens Memory Gardens on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 11AM with Pastor Barry Bolin officiating.
