GUYSVILLE—George Burgess, 83, of Guysville, OH, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH.

He was born June 20, 1935 in Portsmouth, OH, son of the late George Washington and Rachel Cox Burgess. George was proud to be the youngest of 21 children. George and his wife Anna were foster parents for the Athens County Children Services for over 25 years, parenting many, many children. He was a lifelong farmer, a Rome-Canaan Township Trustee, a member of the Grange and a school bus driver in the Rome-Canaan District. George served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for 5 years and the Navy Seabees for three years.

He is survived by 4 children, Jonni Blackwell-Coler, Betsy Blackwell-Schaeffer (Michael), Rodney Burgess (Pam) and Jackie Burgess; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Anna Parker Burgess; all 20 of his brothers and sisters and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019 at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home in Coolville, OH, with Daryl Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Frost Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until time of service.
