ATHENS - Felicia V. Nowak, 69, of Athens, died Sunday morning, February 10, 2019 at Ohio Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbus.
Born September 1, 1949 in Camden, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Walter I. and Felicia K. Krokowski Nowak.
She received her BA in 1970 from Trinity College, her PhD in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin, and her MD from Washington University of Medicine. She was an associate professor in Biomedical Sciences at Ohio University. Her specialties included Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She also served as an editorial board member in Journal of Diabetes Mellitus. Passionate for her work in research, she had many published articles and was also responsible for the discovery of two genes in the brain which helped further treatment of many diseases.
She is survived by a son, Madison M. Nowak, of Athens; a niece, Alicia A Melvin, of Long Island, NY; a nephew, Michael V Nowak, of Long Island, NY; two cousins, Rose Mary Olivo, of Berlin, NJ, and Christine Gonski of Williamstown, NJ.
A memorial service will be Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 6:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Humane Society of the United States.
