Charles Harley Amos

Charles Harley Amos, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Mr. Amos was born in Rutland, Ohio on July 16, 1931, the eighth of nine children and the only boy born to parents Harley G. and Mary Ann Amos. It was said that when he was born, one sister, Betty, was so excited to learn that her new sibling was a boy that she went to all of the close neighbors and said "I've got a baby brother!" Charles grew up in the beautiful hills of southern Ohio and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He graduated from Rutland High School in 1949, and in February 1951 he joined the US Navy serving as an Electrician’s Mate, 2nd Class on the USS Conserver in the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in February of 1955 Charles began dating a childhood friend who soon became the love of his life, and on December 23, 1955, he and Phyllis Burson were married. They shared over 55 years of love and happiness until she passed away in June of 2011. Mr. Amos served in various positions in the HVAC division of the Barber Coleman Company, retiring as a Contract Operations Manager after being employed with them for 30 years. He enjoyed working and continued to work several more years with AC&R Company as a salesman of HVAC equipment. He later worked at Lowe’s in the electrical department, followed by Hertz at the Columbia Airport. Charles was a kind, "quietly friendly" man with a fun personality and a dry sense of humor who enjoyed helping others and loved animals, especially his sweet cat, Nini. He is deeply loved. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and son. He enjoyed reading, history, traveling, and yard work and was very talented in repairing and building things. He enjoyed all things Navy and was very knowledgeable about WWII naval history. Charles was a long-time member of Midlands Christian Church. Charles is survived by his daughter Karen (Jim); three sisters, Margaret, Jean (Jim) and Glenna; three grandchildren, Nathanael (Brittany), Caleb, and Hope (Chris) and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Dylan and David. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, his parents, Harley and Mary Ann, and sisters Maxine, Betty, Shirley, Freda and Mary Ann. The family would like to thank the kind caregivers and staff from Solutions for Living at Home (with Still Hopes), and others who have helped them through this journey. They also would like to thank the compassionate and helpful staff from Lighthouse Hospice Group. Your care has been phenomenal. Visitation will be held at Midlands Christian Church, 1312 W. Main St., Lexington, SC on Friday, April 21, 2017 from 10 AM to 11 AM followed by the funeral service officiated by Pastor Tim Brokaw beginning at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Midlands Christian Church in memory of Charles Amos.
