THE PLAINS – James Edmund MacMillan, MD, 94, of The Plains, died Thursday morning, July 7, 2016 at The Lindley Inn. Born December 27, 1921 in Cincinnati, he was the son of the late Hugh W. and Floy M. Johnson MacMillan. He grew up in Cincinnati where he graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1940, Wooster College in 1944, and The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1946. He interned at the University of Wisconsin in 1947 and was then called to active duty in the Air Force, serving time at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, TX, and Randolph Field in San Antonio, TX. Following a medical residency at The Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis, he practiced family medicine in Milford, Ohio until 1977, and then took a position at Ohio University in Athens as associate professor of clinical medicine and student health where he worked until he retired in 1987. In 1947 he met and married Vergie Schmidt in Madison, WI. They raised a delightful family of four children, Floy (David) Zittin of CA, Karen (Joe) Perez of The Plains, OH, James E. (Debra Dobbs) MacMillan of Mosier, OR, and Gail MacMillan of Villa Park, IL. They now have seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Besides the family, he leaves behind many friends and wonderful memories. A private memorial service will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
