ATHENS – John Robert Glassmire, 79, of Athens, died Sunday, February 28, 2016 at his home. Born March 11, 1936 in Coudersport PA, he was the son of the late John Earl and Lois Beebe Glassmire. He was a graduate of Carmi High School in Il where he was very active in sports being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp in 1955 serving 24 years on active duty retiring as a Major. He was a Decorated Veteran serving two tours in Vietnam. He also served in Beirut and other various duties around the world. Upon his retirement, he enrolled and received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Ohio University. He retired from Ohio University after 15 years of service as Director of Athletic Materials. The three loves of his life were the Marine Corp, family and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Melanie Brown Glassmire; four children, Stacie (Skip) Sholar of Nelsonville, Denny (Jennifer) Glassmire of Sunbury, Jacob (Stephanie) Glassmire of Zanesville, Allen Glassmire of Cleveland, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren; a sister, Carol (Chuck) Kerstetter of Hanover, MI; and a brother, Chuck (Sidney) Glassmire of Gulf Breeze, FL. Services will be Thursday at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Father Donald Horak officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens where Military Services will be conducted by the Athens American Legion Post 21, Athens VFW Post 3477 and the Albany VFW Post 9893.
