THE PLAINS – Dorothy VanDyke, 88, of The Plains, passed away early Thursday morning, February 11, 2016 in Athens, Ohio. Born July 25, 1927 in Akron, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Nora Hutchison Rhoades. Dorothy worked and retired from the Athens Mental Health Center and attended the Richland Avenue United Methodist Church. Her smile and love of people will be sadly missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her from bowling, playing cards, church, and Bingo. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Richard in 1988; her son, Roger Steven in 1970; a brother, Howard Rhoades, Jr.; two sisters, Marie (Oscar) Lenard, and Theron (Ed) Hurst. Per Dorothy’s request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appalachian Community Hospice, 30 Herrold Avenue, Athens, Ohio 45701 or to the Richland Avenue United Methodist Church, 60 Pomeroy Road, Athens, Ohio 45701.
