ATHENS – Walter E. Hunter, 70, of Athens, died Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at his home. Born March 25, 1944 in Athens, he was the son of the late Primrose Dewey and Inez Marie Smith Hunter. He was an Athens High School graduate, US Army Veteran and formerly was Land Manager of Sugar Creek Coal Company and a former employee of Abex. He attended Poston Church and was a member of The Athens American Legion. He was a life member of The Albany VFW and Chauncey AmVets and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Claudette; four children, Walter Dewey Hunter, Tammy Young, Bobby (Sandy) Young, Jim (Michele) Young; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; five siblings, Wilda (Charles) Sharpe, Donna (Leonard) McCollister, Dorothy (Charles) Grinstead, Penny (Roger) Bentley, and Mike (Cathy) Hunter. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Marie Hunter; two siblings, Dewey Gene and Carol. Services will be Monday at 11:00 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Gary Alton officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery where Military Services will be conducted by Athens American Legion Post 21, Athens VFW Post 3477 and Albany VFW Post 9893.
