ATHENS – Mary Winner, 96, of Athens, died Saturday afternoon, January 17, 2015 at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born July 16, 1918 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late J. Louis and Evea Parmiter Winner. She was a graduate of Rome-Canaan High School and received her BS in Education from Ohio University in 1941. She was a member of The Plains United Methodist Church. She also was very active in church work, having taught Sunday school at the Grace Baptist Church in Troy for 25 years. She sang in the Grace Baptist Church Choir and was church clerk and part time secretary for 10 years. She was the church treasurer of the First Baptist Church of Athens for 8 years. She taught one year at Carthage Troy High School in Coolville and three and a half years at Troy High School in Troy. She served 26 years as clerk-treasurer of the Troy City School District Board of Education in Troy. She is survived by a sister, Evea Lou Carrico of The Plains; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Lenart, Florence Michael, and a dear friend, Ann Bader. Services will be Friday at 2:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Wellman officiating. Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery.
