ATHENS – Julia Rose Blackford Shick, 64, of Athens, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014 at her home. Born August 29, 1950 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Franklin T. “Gussie” and Elizabeth E. Weiland Blackford. She attended Rome-Canaan High School and was a 1968 graduate of Federal Hocking High School. She enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation and was away from home for 30 years. She returned home to the family farm on Willow Creek in 2000. God sent special people to live here on earth to love and protect his animals and Julia was one of God’s very “special people”. She devoted her life to the care of “all animals”. She made so many personal sacrifices so that she could take in more animals and give them a loving and healthy life. Julia is survived by her brother, George Urssing and his wife Linda; her sister, Mary Workman and her husband Bobby; four nieces, Amy Davisson, Bobbie Jo (Holton) Workman, Jamie Hart, Lani Blackford Ohly; a nephew, Jeremy Moore; and a very compassionate, devoted, special friend, Debbie McCall. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Blackford; and a niece, Forrest Blackford. A memorial service will be Sunday at 4:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Pastor Bert Christian officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Athens County Humane Society. She will be forever loved and missed by her family and pets. You may sign the online guestbook or leave a private message of sympathy for the family at www.hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com.
