ATHENS - Judy Pettigrew was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 18, 1941 to Robert W. & Louise Shoemaker Newlon and passed away on October 14, 2014. An intelligent and avid reader from the first year she learned to read, Judy was also a devoted and compassionate friend to animals. She provided a loving home to long-term pets such as her many cats and dogs, as well as to short-term pets, such as a robin, a field mouse, many special spiders, and innumerable visiting raccoons. Taking advantage of one of her greatest skills -- shopping -- Judy's first job was as a "secret shopper" for Lazarus stores in Columbus in the late 1950's. A year of study at Ohio University was followed by affiliations in Athens with Mother's Department Store, Belk-Simpson, and Artifacts Gallery, before becoming a real estate agent. Judy was among the early founders of the Dairy Barn Arts Center. She also helped establish and run the Trisolini Gallery Shop, and played a critical role in the original Athens Holiday Perimeter Lighting project in the 1990s. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jack and Robert Newlon, and her beloved grandmother, Bessie Newlon. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Gary Pettigrew, whom she married in Columbus on September 10, 1960, and her adoring and caring son, Robert Wilson Pettigrew, as well as dearly-loved cousins Richard and David Baker of Columbus, and her brother James of Columbus. At her request, no services will be held. Interment will be at Maplewood Cemetery in New Lexington, Ohio. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home where you may sign the online guestbook or leave a private message of sympathy for the family at www.hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com.
