ATHENS - Valerie Proodian Lein (age 87) passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, Ohio. She was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on July 5th, 1927. She moved with her parents to Wooster Massachusetts and graduated with an undergraduate degree in Romance Languages from Clark University, and later, obtained a master’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston. Following graduation, Valerie traveled to Ulm, Germany as an employee of the US Army Special Services Library Branch where she met her husband, Kurt Lein the first day of her arrival. They were married in March, 1955 and made their home in Palo Alto, California. During her life time, Valerie maintained an active career holding positions at Stanford University Library and the Sunnyvale, California school district. She was also a devoted mother, grandmother, and wife. She enjoyed, traveling, reading, and being with her family. In 2007, Valerie moved to Athens to be closer to her only son, James, and his family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kurt Lein, her brother James Proodian, her sister Mary Proodian and her parents, Karop and Margaret Duarte Proodian. She is survived by her son, James Lein, her daughter-in-law, Christine Gidycz, and her beloved granddaughters, Adriana and Elena Lein. The family will host a remembrance celebration following a mass said in her honor in November.
