ATHENS - Charles “Joe” Sanders, 72, of Athens, passed away peacefully, Thursday morning, June 5, 2014 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster. Born September 30, 1941 in Millfield, he was the son of the late Charles Wright and Helen Elizabeth Patton Sanders. He was a graduate of Chauncey Dover High School and was a retired US Navy Veteran with over 20 years of service. He was a former Commander of the Athens VFW Post 3477 and was Captain of the Color Guard of the Athens VFW, Albany VFW and Athens American Legion. He is survived by a brother, John “Keith” Sanders; three children, Charles Leslie Sanders, James “Jim” Sanders, Rita Lynn Sanders Floyd; five grandchildren, Kenneth Joel Sanders, Angel Dawn Sanders, Brittany Sierra Floyd, Morgan Kaitlyn Floyd, and Christopher Brette Streets. Military services will be Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Athens American Legion at 2:00 PM by the Athens American Legion Post 21, Athens VFW Post 3477, and Albany VFW Post 9893 followed by a memorial service.
