MILLFIELD – Margarete Chapman, 77, of Millfield, died Tuesday May 20, 2014 in Springfield. Margarete was born September 2, 1936 in Slazia Germany near the city of Breslau (now Poland). She lived there the first seven years of her life until the Russians invaded and she had to flee with her Mother and four sisters. Her father was killed by a Russian plane while defending the city of Breslau. For two years her family scratched out a meagre existence as refugees until the end of WWII. They then settled outside of the city of Magdeburg in the former East Germany. When Margarete was 16 she departed for Frankfort to work at a shoe factory and attend high school. It was in Frankfort that she met the love of her life George and they were married on April 3, 1959. Margarete worked as cook at several restaurants before working at the Ohio University Inn and then lastly for Ohio University at Baker and Nelson dinning facilities. Margarete was preceded in death by her husband in 1998 and three sisters. She is survived by two children, Diane (John) Lyon of Indianapolis IN, George “Joe” (Rita) Chapman of Springfield OH. Three grand children, Chelsea, Joseph and Myah all of Springfield, OH, and special friends and relatives, Scott and Carol Chapman, Ronald Bergel, Antge Williams, Debbie Elliot and Shirley Carmichael. Services will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with her son Pastor George W. Chapman, III officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery.
