    ATHENS - Joseph H. Agranoff, 91, of ATHENS -assed away Wednesday afternoon, September 19, 2012 at Ochr(39)Bleness Memorial Hospital. He was born December 4, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York and was the son of the late Samuel and Anna Plotkin Agranoff. Joe received his bachelorchr(39)s degree from Antioch College, and received his masterchr(39)s degree in social work from the University of Southern California. He worked in many different capacities during his professional career, most notably serving for 20 years as Director of the Social Service Department at Childrenchr(39)s Hospital in Cincinnati. Joe was also an assistant professor of Pediatric Social Work at the University of Cincinnati and a social work consultant with Salvation Army Family Service during his lengthy career. He was dedicated to pediatric issues and was involved in implementing legislation for the protection of abused children. Joe was also a patron of the arts and spent many years as an old and rare book dealer in Cincinnati. After moving to Athens, Joe became an active member of The Friends of the ATHENS -ublic Library and was involved in numerous other local activities. Joe was compassionate, creative, adventuresome, and was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many. Joe was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army Air Force and served his country in Northern Africa during World War II. Joe is survived by his daughter, Abby Agranoff Lavelle of Athens; two grandchildren, Madeline Lavelle of Columbus and Jackson Lavelle of Athens; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Dr. Joel Agranoff of Vineland, New Jersey. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by the two loves of his life, Barbara Agranoff and Jamie Tevis; three brothers, Fred, Irving, and David Agranoff; and one sister, Betty Agranoff Lawrence. The family requests that friends gather at the Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM, to share memories and stories in celebration of Joechr(39)s life.
