Jean Joyner Stephens, born March 12, 1946 in Greenville, North Carolina, died unexpectedly at home in Athens, on February 28, 2012. Jean owned the ATHENS -ook Center after spending many years as a manager in adult literacy organizations including serving as Executive Director of the Ohio Literacy Center in Kent, Ohio, and the Tennessee Center for Literacy Studies in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was a graduate of East Carolina University with a masters and bachelors in education and also obtained a master of business administration degree from Boston University. Jean is survived by her husband of 41 years, Ray; three adult children, Heather, Wendy, and Adam; and her sister Carol.
