ATHENS - Charles "Pee Wee& Shields (April 14, 1936 - June 22, 2011) - Charlie was born April 14, 1936 at home in Athens, OH.&nbsp;After a two month battle with malignant melanoma Charlie died peacefully on June 22, 2011 in Oceanside CA.&nbsp;An only child, he was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Freda Shields.&nbsp;He is survived by his two children Curtis and Stephanie, daughter-in-law Joanne and his four grandchildren Shannon, Samantha, Heidi, and William.&nbsp;He has a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins as well as many childhood friends that he kept throughout his life. &nbsp; Charlie left ATHENS -o serve his country in the US Army and returned to attend Ohio University where he met Diane Mindall. After marriage and graduation, the couple left ATHENS -or New York City where their daughter, Stephanie, was born in 1962. Pee Wee returned to Ohio, moving to Cleveland to work for US Steel where his son, Curtis was born in 1965. They moved to Dearborn, MI and Charlie worked at Ford Motor Company for the next 30 years. After his divorce in 1989 from Diane, Charlie transferred with Ford to Pleasanton California until his retirement in 1999 took him to Las Vegas.&nbsp;In 2009, he moved for the last time to Oceanside, CA to be closer to his children. &nbsp; Pee Wee will always be remembered for his jokes, his laughter and his outgoing personality. He made friends wherever he went and was known for walking up to people to begin a conversation, was never intimidated, and could make anyone interesting.&nbsp;This led him to spend an evening with his idol Tanya Tucker after spotting her dining alone at the 1980 Winter Olympics. He was curious about the world and took his family on many driving vacations across the United States, exposing his children to the wonders of our great country, especially the food. He enjoyed all sports, was an avid golfer and ran in 2 marathons. Although his mobility was limited in his later years, he never stopped making jokes and still enjoyed going out and meeting people, even if it was only to a local restaurant.&nbsp;&nbsp; He will be missed and loved by many. &nbsp; Services will be held at Christ the King University Parish, 75 Stewart Street, Athens, July 23, 2011 at 10:00 am; reception will follow at the church.
