ATHENS - John D. Bridge, 81, of Athens, died Thursday, February 3, 2011 at his home. Born November 30, 1929 in New Marshfield, he was the son of the late Floyd L. and Gertrude Brewer Bridge. He was a 1947 graduate of Waterloo High School and joined the US Navy in 1948 serving as a medic on the USS Consolation. He retired in 1990 from Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Company/American Electric Power after 38 years of service. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, hunter, gardener and outdoorsman. His vegetable garden was always admired by many. He was a life member of The American Legion, Post 21 and The New Marshfield VFW Post 8804 and a former member of the Hocking Valley Sportsman Association. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Edgar Bridge; a son, David Bridge of Athens; two daughters, Rhonda (David) Hughes and Karen (Don) Lax both of Athens; a brother, Wendell Bridge of Fairborn; a sister, Juanita Dudley of Corbin, KY; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Jack Sickels; a brother-in-law, Rev. C.H. Dudley; and sister-in-law, Ann Bridge. Services will be Monday at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Dave Cogar officiating. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery.
