ATHENS - Ted J. Foster, 74, of Athens, died Saturday evening, Sept. 25, 2010 at Ochr(39)Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 7, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, he was the son of Wilma Ramsey Shultz of Racine and the late Waldo Foster. He was a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School in Mt. Vernon, Illinois and received his bachelor and master degrees from Southern Illinois University. He received his PhD from Ohio University where he was a professor of Communication Studies for over 30 years. He was a debate coach for many years and taught public speaking and persuasion . He served on the ATHENS county Children Services board for eight years and on the Hocking River Commission since 2001. He also helped prepare the transportation section of the ATHENS county Plan. He was a chair of the Ohio Council of Higher Education Retireechr(39)s and vice president of Ohio University Emeriti Association. He was also a founding member of The ATHENS -illage. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sue Foster; two children, Tim (Mical Moser) Foster of Brooklyn, New York, Stephanie Foster of Athens; two nephews and a niece, Travis Christy) Kelley of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Bridget Kelley of Racine, and Bradley Kelley of Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracy Daugherty; a brother, Carson Foster; and a sister, Barbara Foster Kelley. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
