James C. Sloan, born June 25, 1919 in Marion, Ohio passed away Sunday, May 23, 2010; he had been an ATHENS -rea resident since October, 2007. Sloan served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and not long after his discharge began his professional career as an office assistant at Marion Federal Savings & Loan Association. Sloan retired 32 years later as its Chief Executive Officer and for a number of years thereafter remained active in the business as the Chair of its Board of Directors. Sloan belonged to a number of Veteranchr(39)s organizations; was a life member of Bird-McGinnis Post #162 of the American Legion; and was the long time treasurer of the Memorial and Veterans Day Association of Marion. Sloan was also an active Mason, member of Grand Lodge of Accepted Masons, Sojourners Lodge #653, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus and the Royal and Select Masters of the Marion Council 22. He was affiliated with the Marion Commandery 36, Knights Templar, Marion Chapter 62 of the Royal Arch Masons and the Aladdin Temple of Columbus. Sloan was also a member and past president of the Marion Shrine Club. Active in Republican politics in Marion County, Sloan served a number of years on the Marion County Board of Elections and also served 25 years on the Marion County Veteranchr(39)s Service Commission. In retirement, Sloan particularly enjoyed his membership in the Ohio Gun Collectorchr(39)s Association and served terms on its Board of Directors and was its long time treasurer. Sloan was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline; second wife, Juanita; and brothers John and Walter B. Sloan. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Martha Sloan; granddaughters, Melissa Sloan and Amy Brandenstein and her husband David and great-granddaughters, Abby and Emma. In Athens, Sloan was made to feel at home by many and especially the staff at The Lindley Inn and by members of First United Methodist Church where Sloan was an associate member. Calling hours will be observed Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with additional calling hours in Marion on Friday and a funeral Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S.
