Athens- Gene E. Coon, 94 of Athens, passed away Monday morning December 21, 2009 at the Lindley Inn, where he was a resident for the past eight and a half years. Born February 7, 1915 in The Plains, he was the son of the late Leslie and Hattie Jones Coon and a 1933 graduate of The Plains High School. He served with the U.S. Air Force in England during World War II and worked 35 years for the McBee Corporation and Ohio University. He was a member of the ATHENS -ountry Club, Elks, American Legion, VFW, and Redman. He enjoyed golf and sports. He is survived by two sisters: Norma Jean Hoskinson of Milford, Helen (Verl) Whetstone of Cleveland; Stepchildren- Robert (Nancy) Matthews of Athens, Debra (Rick) Horvath of Phoenix, AZ; Step-Grandchildren, Michael (Ann) Matthews of Bloomfield Hills, MI, Machelle (Robert) Stewart of Athens, Brett (Nikki) Horvath of Phoenix, AZ, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Louise Tribe Coon, who died in 1972, his second wife of 12 years, Opal Matthews Coon, who died in 1985, and brothers: Les Coon, Jack Coon, and sister: Betty Coon Poffenhager. There will be no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held at the convenece of the family at the West Union Street Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home.
