THE PAINS - Tom Slater, 78, of The Plains, died peacefully early Monday morning, July 6, 2009 at his home. Born June 12, 1931 in Murray City, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary Hopes Slater. He was a graduate of The Plains High School and served in Korea with George Company, 3rd Bn, 1st Marine Division. He was actively involved in the ATHENS county Baseball program and was an avid sports fan. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Tinkham Slater; a daughter and son-in-law, Stacie and Dan Decaminada of The Plains; three grandchildren, Scott (Gina) Decaminada of Delaware, Sher (Heath) Wheatley of The Plains, Dawn (Ron) Williams of Athens; six great grandchildren, Bryden and Michael Decaminada, Landon and Weston Wheatley, Fisher and Brook Williams; a sister, Sarah Gill of Newark; a brother-in-law, Paul Culver of Hopedale; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his dog, Buster. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nalda Culver, Shirley Channell; two brothers, Charles and Paul Slater; and an infant brother, Larry Slater. Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home Wednesday 6 to 8 PM. Cremation will follow and a graveside service will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at a later date.
