ATHENS - Martha Varner, 70, of Duncan Falls, formerly of Athens, passes away Wednesday at 12:48 PM, June 3, 2009 at Genesis Health Care System in Zanesville after a lengthy illness. She was born July 21, 1938 in ATHENS county to the late Florence Carsey Gilkey and Leo Douglas. Martha was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jordie R. Varner. Martha is survived by four children, a son, Jody Lynn Varner of Philo; three daughters, Deborah (Samuel) Sudduth of Blue Rock, Pamela (Carl) Brown of Philo, Tamela (Jerry) Simeral of Zanesville; six grandchildren, Jody Lynn Varner, Adrianna Mahalia Rochelle Varner, Austin Tyrel Varner, Samuel Sudduth III, Tyler Matthew Brown, Jordie Richard Sudduth; one great granddaughter, Natalie Nicole Sudduth; two brothers, Thomas "Frank& Gilkey of Albany, Kermit Gilkey of Shade; a step brother, Gerald Gilkey of Athens; numerous nieces and nephews. Martha resided in Duncan Falls since 1961 where she was a beloved member of the community and child care provider. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim Douglas, Harold "Bunk& Douglas, Kenneth "Butch& Gilkey; and an infant sister, Phyllis. Services will be Saturday at 2:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Burlingham Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
