ALBANY - Bernice L. Spaulding , 91, of Albany, OH., passed away on Wednesday morning, April 22, 2009 , at her home, with her family at her side. Born in Rutland, OH on August 26, 1917 she was the daughter of the late James Snyder and Ethel Amanda Skinner Snyder. Due to the early death of her mother, she and her siblings were raised by their maternal grandparents, Harry and Helen Skinner. Bernice graduated from Rutland High School in 1935, received her RN license from Holzer School of Nursing in 1938 and graduated from Ohio University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science. She was a member of Kappa Delta and the ROTC where she received awards for Sharpshooter. She married her true love, Bernard B. Spaulding on May 2, 1942. In her early career, she was employed by Ohio University as the school nurse for Rufus Putman Elementary. She then went on to be the Director of Nursing for the Tuberculosis Hospital in Nelsonville, OH and continued there when it changed to the Childrenchr(39)s Center until its closing. She completed her state employment with the ATHENS -ental Health Center. Her love of nursing never diminished and she stepped back into the work force as a unit supervisor for Hickory Creek Nursing Center for several more years. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be truly missed. Bernice was a Past Worthy Matron and a 50+ year member of Order of Eastern Star #175 . She and her husband, Bernard were dedicated to and truly enjoyed their work and travels in the Masonic Bodies. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, working with her indoor and outdoor flowers and camping. She is survived by a son, Bernard B. Spaulding, who made his home with her; a daughter, Judy (Robert) Markins, Langsville; two grandsons, Robert (Candi) Spaulding, Albany; Cory (Lori) Russell, New Marshfield; five granddaughters, Terri (Vernon) Chesser, New Marshfield; Angela (Steven) Grant, New Marshfield; Rebecca Russell, Athens; Ashley and Catelyn Spaulding, Logan, OH; two step grandsons, Chad (Kelly) and Eric (Jessica) Markins, both of New Marshfield; a brother, Donald (Hazel) Snyder, Lake Havasu City, AZ; a sister and best friend, Thelma Halley, Wilmington, OH; a brother in-law Al (Louise) Spaulding, Akron, OH; eight great grandsons; Zach, Morgan, Christopher, Trey, Marcus, Stone, Lucas and Brayden; four great granddaughters, Riley, Hunter, Madison, and Kira; many nieces and nephews, all of which, had a special spot in her heart. In addition to her parents and husband of years, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry E. Spaulding, who was killed in 1969 in Viet Nam; her mother in-law, Muriel Spaulding; a brother, James Snyder; two brother in-laws, Myron Halley and Douglas Spaulding. Services will be Sunday at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Burial will be in ATHENS -emory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 11:00 AM until time of the service. Eastern Star services will be Sunday at 11:00 AM. In lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Appalachian Community Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice and Health Services, Inc, 30 Herrold Ave, Athens, OH 45701 Family and friends will gather at her home following the services.
