<p align="left"> KATE CORNWELL Norma Katherine Leslie Cornwell of Athens, Ohio, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2009. Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania on September 23, 1909, she was the daughter of Grace Dale Hart and Charles Grant Leslie. In 1924 she moved with her mother and brother to a farm in Stewart, Ohio and was graduated from Rome Canaan High School in 1928. After high school, she moved to ATHENS and attended Ohio University. She worked for Dr. B.M. Covert, optician, in the rear of Cornwell Jewelers, and met her future husband, Walter Cornwell. They were married on September 22, 1938. Kate was the oldest living member of the First Presbyterian Church in Athens, joining on April 3, 1939. She was the Superintendent of the Sunday School Program for 16 years, which she described as one of her most rewarding experiences. She was a founding member of the Intermediate Child Conservation League (CCL) and a past co-owner of Cornwell Jewelers with her husband, Walter Cornwell. Katechr(39)s greatest passions were her faith, family and friends. One of her great joys was taking her three grandchildren to church and cooking family dinners every Sunday. She kept a diary of each special dinner she cooked. She enjoyed golfing, bridge, nature, antiques, early morning conversations and reading of scripture with her special friends, the color of purple, and the companionship of the many dogs she had in her life. She will be remembered for her inspiring example of love, compassion, happiness, and celebrations of lifechr(39)s everyday moments. Besides her parents, Kate was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Walter Clinton Cornwell, adored brother Chester Grant Leslie, Lisbon, Ohio, brother in law, Foster Berry Cornwell and wife Helen Cornwell, Athens, Ohio. She is survived by three sons, Robert Leslie Cornwell and wife Constance Hughes Cornwell, Albany Ohio, Blaine Grant and Boyd Berry Cornwell, Joplin, Missouri, and niece Carol Leslie, Lisbon, Ohio. Kate was known as "Gammy& to her three grandchildren: Anne Leslie Cornwell (Dr. Michael Ginder), Kristin Lee Cornwell, David Edward Cornwell (Jennifer Messina); and to her six great grandchildren: William Leslie Ginder, Ava Katherine and Hayden Lee Myers, Jack Phillip, Abigail Eleanora, and Ryan Edward Cornwell, all of Athens, Ohio. Her family would like to thank Katechr(39)s friends who have made her lifechr(39)s journey joyful and Kimes Nursing Center who have made her final years less difficult. A private family graveside service will be held at West Union Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 12 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church, Court and Washington Streets, Athens, Ohio.
