ATHENS - George W. Sands, 73, of Athens, passed away November 4, 2008 at the Cincinnati VA Hospital after a brief illness. Born Sept 19, 1935 in Logan, he was the son of the late Howard H. and Grace Shafer Sands. George graduated from ATHENS High School and Ohio University. He did post graduate work at both OU and Miami University. He was a music instructor as well as band director for Albany, Wilkesville, and Nelsonville schools. He also taught music at Lakota HS, West Chester, OH. He served in the US Military as a chaplainchr(39)s assistant. He was owner of Sandchr(39)s Music Store and Thirteen West Gallery in Athens. George was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Music Honorary. He had been a vocal soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He was a former member of the ATHENS -iwanis and the ATHENS -usic Clubs. George was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and also attended the First United Methodist Church on College Street and the Church of the Good Shepherd. George is survived by a sister, Ruth Ellen Mitchell of Ft. Collins, CO; two nephews, Daniel of Ft Collins, CO, Lawrence of North Pole, Alaska; and several cousins. George had a group of friends (Too many to mention) with whom he spent many happy hours. Also surviving are special friends and caregivers Alan and Stephanie Goldsberry. There will be no calling hours or services observed. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. His cremains will be interred at West Union Street Cemetery.
