ATHENS - James Everett Witherell, 93, of Athens, died Thursday morning, Feb. 21, 2008 at Ochr(39)Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born June 14, 1914 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Archie and Adelaide Hackworthy Witherell. Mr. Witherell graduated from Lawrence University, BA Phi Beta Kappa, MA at University of Wisconsin and graduate studies at Ohio State University. He taught Romance Languages at several universities. He was a WWII Veteran and worked 23 years at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a technical editor. He was a lover of books and classical music and excelled at word games. The greatest love of his life was his family. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. We will hold him with love in our hearts forever. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Thomas Witherell; three children, Mary Ellen Barwise of Bloomington, IN, Emmy (Siraj) Haji of Columbus, James (Jeanie) Witherell, MD of Pomeroy; eight grandchildren, Melanie, Claire and Jon (Karen) Barwise, Matthew (Jenny) Mulbarger, Anne (Tony) Mulbarger Ransom, Jason (Cindy) Witherell, Joshua (Katie) Witherell, John Thomas Witherell; five great grandchildren; two nieces, Anne Witherell, Jane Witherell Martel; loving friends, Linda and Vic Nelson, Rhonda McComas, Lisa Parker, Becky Newell and Janice Schoonover. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother John. Services will be Monday at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rocksprings Cemetery in Pomeroy.
