Athens- John A. Cornwell, 70, passed away Friday morning after a lengthy illness. A life-long resident of Athens, he was the son of the late Arthur E. and Delia D. Cornwell. John enjoyed a lengthy career at Ohio University. Prior to his retirement in 1993, he served as the Administrative Director of Student Health services. Before joining OU in 1966, he served as a radioman in Germany with the US Army, where he achieved the rank of SP4. After retiring from the regular Army in 1959, he remained in the Ohio National Guard, achieving the rank of Staff Sgt. John graduated from Ohio University with a BS in Botany in 1962. John was an active volunteer in the ATHENS -ommunity. He was a co-founder of the ATHENS -outh Hockey League, and was a volunteer official for the OU Bobcats Hockey club. He was also active in the Southeast Ohio Orienteering Club, the ATHENS -arathon, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, and the ATHENS county Amateur Radio Association (NC8V). He served in various official capacities in all of these organizations. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Janice Kreitzer Cornwell, who passed away in January 2007, and his brother, Brent D. Cornwell. He is survived by two sons: Michael J. (Sherri Jo) Cornwell of Skokie, IL and Brian A. (Connie) Cornwell of Athens; and a daughter, Amy (David) Calvert of Lewis Center, OH. He is also survived by his grandsons: Arthur, of Vienna, Austria, and Eric, of Athens; and granddaughters: Kate and Molly Calvert of Lewis Center. In addition, he is survived by two special friends: Christy Luehrman and Mary Lou Bernard, both of Athens. There will be a visitation at Hughes-Moquin Funeral home Monday, February 4, from 5 to 7 pm with a memorial service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ATHENS county Chapter of the American Red Cross, 100 S. May Ave, Athens, Ohio 45701 or the Appalachian Visiting Nurse Association/Hospice, 30 Herrold Ave, Athens, Ohio 45701.
