align=center>Herbert Roscoe ShieldsTHE PLAINS Herbert Roscoe Shields, 83, of The Plains, died Sunday morning, Aug. 20, 2006 at Ochr(39)Bleness Memorial Hospital.Born Jan. 28, 1923 in The Plains, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Nettie Anderson Shields.He attended school in The Plains and was ATHENS High School graduate. He spent five years in military service. He went into active duty with the Ohio National Guard, 37th Division on Oct. 15, 1940 and served as 1st Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion 134th Field Artillery spending 2 ?? years in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. in Ely, Nevada. He lived in Dayton for 17 years employed at The National Cash Register Company. He moved back to ATHENS county and worked for a number of years with ATHENS county Engineers Department as Road Superintendent and Deputy Engineer. He also worked with a number of surveyors in ATHENS county. He was also a former Waterloo Twp. Trustee. He retired to his farm at Five Points and enjoyed golfing. He was a member of the The Plains VFW Post 7174, the ATHENS -merican Legion Post 21, The Green and White Club, the ATHENS -hurch of Christ, and was a 32nd Degree Mason.He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ida; a sister, Tommey Wilson of Athens; a sister-in-law, Frieda Shields of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Lawrence, Delbert, Collin, Robert and Jackie Shields.Services will be Wed. at 1 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Rev. H. Willard Love officiating. Burial will be at NewMarshfield Cemetery where military services will be conducted by the ATHENS -FW, The Albany VFW and ATHENS -merican Legion.
