Dr. Robert G. Stockmal Athens- Robert G. Stockmal D.O., PhD., 67, of ATHENS died Wednesday morning, April 19, 2006 at his home.Born in Philadelphia PA, February 6, 1939, he was the son of the late Alexander and Helen Borowska Stockmal.Dr. Stockmal received his BS in 1960 from St. Josephchr(39)s College in Philadelphia and was commissioned 2nd Lt in the USAF upon graduation. He served as a missile launch officer in the ATLAS ICBM missile program. After four years of service, Dr. Stockmal pursued a graduate degree in Microbiology and Immunology atJeffersonMedical College in Philadelphia, receiving his PhD in 1968. He taught at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and was chairman of the Dept. of Microbiology and Public Health from 1968 to 1978. At this time, he was also a research consultant for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Stockmal completed an accelerated Osteopathic Medical Degree program graduating from PCOM in 1977. He taught in the Dept. of Family Medicine at OUCOM from 1978 until 2004, his clinical responsibilities included Geriatric Inpatient Care and Family Medicine. In addition, Dr. Stockmal contributed to the weekly "Family Medicine" column in the ATHENS -essenger. Dr. Stockmal returned to the military as an advisor for OUCOMchr(39)s MOD-V program. He went on to become an Army flight surgeon in 1985. Following his deployment for Desert Storm, Dr. Stockmal became the commanding Flight Surgeon for EAATS at Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA. At this time, he was the only AGR physician for National Guard aviators in the USA. Dr. Stockmal retired from the US Army in 1997 as a full Colonel.Dr. Stockmal was a member of Christ the King University Parish, American Osteopathic Assoc., Ohio Osteopathic Assoc., Army Medical Osteopathic Physicians Society, Aero-Space Medical Assoc., Army Flight Surgeons Assoc., Friends of the AirForce Museum, Sigma Psi, and was an Eagle Scout. He is survived by his wife Verna, of 44 years, two daughters: Anna (Frank) Wolf of Hamilton, Marlene (Steve) Bobish of Centerville; Seven grandchildren: US Coast Guard Cadet Charles Kelly, Margaret, Max, Marianna, and Marc Wolf, Nicholas and Andrew Bobish; a brother, Alex Stockmal of Pittsburgh, and a sister, Chrisanne (Leigh) McAuliffe of Houston.Friends may call at the Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home Sunday April 23, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday April 24, at 11:00 AM at Christ the King University Parish with Father Marty Holler officiating.
