James R. Darnell Sr.THE PLAINS James R. Darnell Sr., 78 of The Plains, passed away Tuesday evening, April 18, 2006 at his residence. Born January 19, 1928, in ATHENS county, he was the son of Nellie Phillips of ATHENS and the late Emmett Darnell. He was a painter by trade. He worked for Van Meter Painting and Mitchell Painting. James was a life member of the VFW 7174 of The Plains and American Legion of Athens, DAV/VFW of Athens, AMVETS of Chauncey and a past District and Post Commander of the ATHENS -AV. He was also a member of the Rome Canaan Alumni Association, class of 1944. He loved to ride his scooter about The Plains and with his little white poodle, Beethoven. He was an avid movie watcher at the Movies 10 and going to the Sundae Shoppe in The Plains. He is survived by his three sons and two daughters, James R. Jr. (Joy) of Jacksonville, Jeffrey (Linda) of Canton, GA., David (Connie) of Athens, Sheryl (Jeff) Higgins of The Plains, and Susan (Tom) Watkins of Columbus; nine grandchildren, James III, Crystal, Alicia, and Amanda of GA., Tonea of New Marshfield, Carrie April of The Plains, Shawna of Peachland, NC., Melissa of Conway, AR., Don of Raleigh, NC., Dustin of High Point, NC., Patrick, Christopher, and Tom of Columbus; and two step grandchildren, Joey and Robbie of GA.; nine great grandchildren; stepmother, Maysell Darnell of Blue Ridge, GA.; one half-sister, Helen Pope; two aunts, Rena Chesser of Mesa, AZ., and Verna Mulpus of Jacksonville; and a number of brothers and sisters in law; also a dear neighbor and friend, Sue Carnes. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his wife Nancy F.; his brother, Harold; his sister, Wilma and one great grandson, Jacob Kempton. Services will be Friday at 11 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Timothy Waugh officiating. Burial will be atAthensMemory Gardens where military services will be conducted by American Legion, ATHENS and Albany VFW. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
