ATHENS - Stephen H. Miller, 62, died Saturday in ATHENS -fter a long battle with cancer.For 17 years, Miller headed operations of The Associated Press in Germany and central Europe during the fall of communism and the Balkan wars.He joined the AP in Columbus, OH, in 1966 and was named foreign correspondent in Berlin in 1977. After holding senior positions in Vienna, London and Copenhagen, he returned to direct the Frankfurt, Germany, bureau in 1986 and moved to Berlin after German reunification.He told interviewers at his Berlin retirement in 2004 that "For a journalist, it was perfect timing. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of communism in the east, war after war in the former Yugoslavia, German reunification and the German governmentchr(39)s return to Berlin - - I was there for things I never expected to see in my lifetime."A graduate of Logan High School and Earlham College, he attended The Ohio State University before joining AP. Survivors include his wife Eve, of Athens; mother Frances Miller, Athens; sister Jane (Dan) Alder, Athens; brothers Brian (Ann) Conesus, N.Y. and Christopher (Mary) of Concord, N.H.Per his request there will be no services.
