ATHENS - David H. Hughes, 91,of Athens, died Friday morning, June 24, 2005 at Lindley Inn, The Plains. He was born March 1, 1914 in Oak Hill and was the son of the late Lewis and Sarah Alice Morgan Hughes. He graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1932 and from Ohio University in 1936 where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, and from the Cleveland College of Embalming in 1937. He was associated with the Dowler and Ferguson Funeral Home from 1932 until 1950. In 1950 he purchased the business from the late Carl M. Ferguson. From 1950 until 1960 the business was known as the Dowler-Ferguson-Hughes Funeral Home. The business moved into a newly constructed building on Morris Avenue. In 1960, at which time the business was incorporated as Hughes Funeral Home Inc. The late Roger E. Gall and the late Vance W. Harris were the other members of the corporation. The business was sold in 1975. He was a member of the ATHENS -irst Presbyterian Church, 65 year member of Portland Lodge 366 F and A M at Oak Hill, 65 year member of ATHENS -hapter 175 O.E.S, a 65 year member of the ATHENS -hapter, ATHENS -ouncil, and ATHENS -ommandry, a 50 year member of Aladdin Temple of the Shrine in Columbus, the ATHENS -lks Lodge, the ATHENS county Shrine Club. He also served as a Director of the former ATHENS county Savings and Loan Company for over 25 years. He is survived by two sons, Dr. James D. (Joyce A.) Hughes of Largo,Flo., and Donald L. (Deborah M.) Hughes of Chillicothe; four grandchildren, Cheryl L. Hughes, Melissa A. (Jeffrey W.) Branhan, Kristine K. (Joseph A.) Cavicchiolo, and Kendrick L. (Allison M.) Hughes; four great grandchildren, Caitlyn K. Cavicchiolo, Connor J. Cavicchiolo, Amanda Elizabeth Branhan, and Cameron David Cavicchiolo; one sister-in-law, Leota Hughes of Canton; and his special friend, Ferne Carroll of Oak Hill.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Tillie E. Hughes and his brother Edward H. Hughes. Services will be Monday at 1 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with Rev. Craig W. Seitz officiating.
