THE PLAINS - John Otho "Doc" Coon, 87, of The Plains, passed away early Saturday morning, March 5, 2005 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.Born July 25, 1917 in Floodwood, he was the son of the late Perl and Frances Helwig Coon. He was a retired coal miner and loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of The Plains Methodist Church.He is survived by three children, Sue (Worley) Mitchell of Albany, William "Bill" (Patricia) Coon of The Plains, and Jane Hines of The Plains; six grandchildren, Tamara (Dwayne) Hawk, Steven (Lori) Mitchell, Rodney (Tracy) Coon, Drs. Kelly (Rick Chase) Coon, Todd (Suzy) Hines, Teresa (Ben) Humrichouser; eight great grandchildren, Macey Mitchell, Austin and Ryan Coon, Zoe, Lauren and Samuel Chase, Brice Hines, Nathan Humrichouser; three step grandchildren, Tom (Jenny) Dunkle, Tim (Sue) Dunkle, Rick (Wendy) Dunkle; eight step great grandchildren, Owen Hawk, Kevin and Kelly Chase, Lauren, Jacob, Sarah, Jerrod, and Grace Dunkle; a brother, Willard (Juanita) Coon of Athens; a sister, Mary Bradley of Athens; a sister-in-law, Esther McLaren of Athens; many nieces, nephews and cousins, and a special friend, Dorothy Cooley.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Alice, in 1992; five sisters, Blanche Adams, Clarice Shields, Waveline Coon, Verna Brakall and Margaret Madru; and two brothers, Leslie and Lorenzo Coon.Services will be Tuesday at 1:00 PM at The Plains United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Tim Waugh and Rev. Bob Pollock officiating. Burial will be in Hooper Ridge Cemetery.
